Shared Ministry Position Description
Position: Lector
Purpose of Position: To proclaim the Word of God in the midst of the faith community’s worship.
Responsibilities:
- Study and reflect upon the readings prior to scheduled date
- Proclaim reading(s) and intercessions at Mass
- Attendance at scheduled Masses and securing substitute when unable to attend.
Qualifications:
- Understanding and appreciation for the importance of the Word of God in the life of faith.
- Ability to effectively interpret and proclaim God’s Word in the midst of the assembly, emphasizing correct pronunciation, good articulation, use of microphone, etc.
- Appropriate dress and ability to do ministry with reverence.
Amount of time required:
- Preparation time varies with each individual. Typically ½ to 1 hour during the week.
- 1 ¼ hours (includes Mass and the 15 minutes prior to Mass)
- Scheduled approximately 1 time per month
When ministry is performed: Saturday afternoon and/or Sunday morning Masses, as well as Feast days and/or other liturgical celebrations.
Length of Commitment: 1 year (July- June)
Training provided: Initial 1-hour training, including hand-outs/training materials.
2006-07 training dates and times: Saturday, August 12 – 12:30 PM Thursday. September 7 – 6:00 PM Saturday, October. 7 – 12:30 PM Thursday, November 9 – 6:00 PM Saturday, December 2 – 12:30 PM Thursday, January 11 – 6:00PM Saturday, Feb. 3 – 12:30 PM Thursday, March 8 – 6:00 PM Saturday, April 14 – 12:30 PM Thursday, May 3 – 6:00 PM Saturday, June 2 – 12:30 PM
