Shared Ministry Position Description

Position:

Nursery Assistant

Purpose of Position:

Provide proper supervision and care of children in nursery room during Mass.

Responsibilities:

1. Be present on scheduled date and secure an appropriate substitute when unavailable to meet commitment for that date.

2. Check in with sacristan/ushers for the day upon arrival. This provides two purposes:

a. ushers/ greeters know nursery care is available

b. arrangements can be made for you to receive Eucharist during Mass

3. Ensure that room is ready and safe for the arrival of children (arrangement of furniture, supplies as provided in the bin, etc.)

4. Check children in: provide nametags and make parents aware of pick-up procedure at that time.

5. Provide safe and caring supervision of children.

6. Stay with children until each child is retrieved by the appropriate adult. Report to that adult any concerns relative to your care of his/her child during that time.

7. Pack all church nursery supplies in appropriate bin and set the bin outside the closed nursery door for pick-up by transportation/set-up team.

8. Communicate any concerns or list of needed supplies to parish liaison within the next 48 hours.

Qualifications:

1. Completion of Archdiocesan Training for volunteers who work with children. Contact parish office for training dates.

2. Must be able to be fully present to this ministry during Mass, and for 15 minutes prior to and after Mass.

3. Good with children – able to engage them, care for them, be creative with them, etc.

4. Attention to detail; able to set boundaries and follow-through as is appropriate.

5. Caring, pleasant, flexible and patient person.

6. Able to ask for help when needed.

Amount of time required:

1 ½ hours per assigned date; frequency dependent upon number of committed volunteers or your availability.

When ministry is performed:

Sunday mornings for 15 minutes prior to Mass, during Mass and then 10-15 minutes following Mass.

Length of Commitment:

One year (July-June)

Training provided:

Initial training and ongoing mentoring as needed.
